The film centers on Alif (played by Gazza Zubizareta as a teen), a young boy from a simple village on the shores of Lake Maninjau in West Sumatra. He has big dreams of going to a top high school in Bandung and then to the prestigious Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB), aspiring to be a great intellectual like his idol, B.J. Habibie. However, his mother (Amak), has other plans. She wants him to attend Pondok Madani, an Islamic boarding school in the remote village of Ponorogo, East Java, so he can deepen his religious knowledge.
