The title The Suffering of Light is borrowed from a concept by the German poet and philosopher Johann Wolfgang von Goethe. In his Theory of Colours ( Zur Farbenlehre ), Goethe posited that colors are not merely wavelengths of light filtered through a prism, but rather the result of light interacting with darkness. He wrote that "colors are the deeds and sufferings of light."
