BitTornado was an advanced, open-source BitTorrent client developed by John Hoffman (known online as "Shad0w"). Originally born as an extension of the official BitTorrent client, it was initially called "Shad0w's Experimental Client."

At the time, the official client was notoriously minimalist. It offered almost no user interface customization, no speed limits, and very little diagnostic information. Hoffman’s fork aimed to change that, eventually rebranding as BitTornado to reflect its raw speed and ability to manage multiple data streams simultaneously.
