Based on the 2002 novel by Valerio Massimo Manfredi, the film is set in 476 A.D. as the Western Roman Empire is collapsing. The plot follows a young emperor, 12-year-old Romulus Augustus (Thomas Brodie-Sangster), who is forced to flee Rome after the barbarian general Odoacer captures the city. Accompanied by his loyal tutor, Ambrosinus (Sir Ben Kingsley), and a brave Roman soldier, Aurelius (Colin Firth), he travels to Britain to find the "Last Legion" of followers who can help him reclaim his throne and fulfill a legendary destiny.
