On the morning of , Carina Lau was driving to the home of fellow actor Michael Miu Kiu-wai for a late-night gathering. While en route, her vehicle was targeted by a group of men. The trauma was dormant for 12 years until October 2002, when the Hong Kong magazine East Week published one of the topless photos on its cover. The image, showing a clearly distressed and crying Lau, was published to boost sales.

Survivors do not share their pain to go viral. They share to stop the pain for the next person. Campaigns must be held accountable to that pragmatic outcome.
