Developed by two musicians-turned-scientists, Leopold Godowsky Jr. and Leopold Mannes, and released by Kodak in 1935, it was the first commercially successful amateur color film. But what set it apart was its complex chemistry. Unlike modern films where the color dyes are embedded in the emulsion, Kodachrome started as a black-and-white film. Its vibrant colors were introduced during a complex, proprietary development process known as (later K-14). This unique process gave the film its most beloved characteristics:
