Moti falls in love with a younger village girl, (Padma Khanna), but cannot afford her father's steep bride-price ( mehar ). In a ruthless business move, Moti manipulates and marries Mahjubhi simply to exploit her labor for free. Once he amasses enough wealth, he unjustly divorces Mahjubhi to marry Phoolbanu. Saudagar , which translates to "Merchant" or "Trader," is not to be confused with the 1991 Dilip Kumar-Raj Kumar film of the same name. The 1973 film starred in a pivotal supporting role (before he became a full-fledged superstar), alongside Nutan , the timeless beauty and acting powerhouse, and Padma Khanna .
