Set in a post-apocalyptic future, the story takes place in Panem, a tyrannical government that exercises total control over 12 districts. As punishment for a past rebellion, the Capitol forces each district to participate in the Hunger Games, a brutal fight-to-the-death tournament featuring 24 tributes, 12 boys and 12 girls, aged 12-18. The protagonist, Katniss Everdeen (played by Jennifer Lawrence), volunteers to participate in place of her younger sister, Prim, and embarks on a perilous journey alongside fellow tribute Peeta Mellark.
